World Animal Day
World Animal day is on the 4th October. If you haven't already got involved it's not to late to do so.
World Animal Day began in 1931 it was a means of stressing the importance of endangered species. But it has become more than that now.
It celebrates all animal life, humans relationship with animals, how they help and support us as well as being our companions.
Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals and his feast day is the 4th October. So it is an appropriate day to have it on. World Animal Day was launched in the UK in 2003.
In India a few years ago they celebrated the day by having a procession and children wore animal masks. In Jordan they vaccinated dogsto protect them against rabies. It showed how important it was to be a responsible dog owner. In Cambodia they held a competition in animal art.
World Animal Day is a good example of showing how vital it is to care
for animals. They can also help us through difficult times. People who
have an animal as a pet are happier, healthier and more relaxed.
You can celebrate individually, in school or in the work place. The web site has lots of ideas of ways you can celebrate. In the kidszone they have things like making a toy for your cat, hamster or gerbil. Decorating a bowl for yourcat or dog. Making a
bird cake for the wildlife in your garden. you can make a toy aquarium or send cards to your friends and family wishing them a happy day. The web site tells you how you can make each thing. It also suggests just taking your dog for a good walk and having fun with it. My favourite though was adopting a lion unfortunately this doesn't mean owning the lion although it is probably just as well. But you can sponsor a lion you pay in a small sum every year in return you will receive photos and updates about it. It doesn't have to be a lion it could be another animal such as a bear, rhino or a dolphin. There are all sorts of things you can do for world animal day for more details visit
