The American Presidential Elections take place on the 4th November. A president may be in office for a term which is 4 years. He may be elected for a second term. But no President is allowed to run for a third term. There are 2 candidates in the race for the White House a democrat and a republican.
The American system of electing a President takes place over several months.
First of all each party will have to vote on who they want to be their candidate. This would have begun in January with primaries and caucuses. The first primary is held in New Hampshire. Some primaries take place on the same day in March and this is known as Super Tuesday.
Caucuses are party meetings where each member votes. In some primaries you do not have to be a party member to vote. Primaries are the preferred choice of most states as they are considered more open and fair. By a process of elimination in these early elections both the republicans and democrats each choose their candidate who will run for president.
John Mc Cain the republican candidate won his party's vote very early on in the primary and caucuses elections. The candidate for the democrats, Barack Obama took much longer as it was very close between him and Hilary Clinton. In the end they chose Obama to be the democratic candidate. But Hilary Clinton proved a strong determined candidate. The Presidential election between the republican John Mc Cain and the democrat Barack Obama takes place on the 4th November 2008.
The American President is the most influential person in the world. So it is a highly responsible and important job. The White House is both the home and office of the President of the United States. The republican candidate John Mc Cain is very experienced. He is also a Vietnam veteran. The democratic candidate Barack Obama has little experience. But is very charismatic and an excellent speaker.
Whether America chooses its first African American President in Barack Obama or decides to choose John Mc Cain who if elected would become the oldest President will depend on the voters. We will know which one has won the presidency in November. America will decide while the world watches intently.
