Discovery

Children's Web Magazine wants you to send information about what
goes on in your country or how you keep up any traditions and what you
have discovered about countries you have lived in or visited.
For example if you live in America how do you spend Thanksgiving,
Independence Day, Christmas and so on? In Ireland how do you spend
Saint Patrick's Day, Halloween and so forth? It can also be any museums,
art galleries, historical sites, attractions and so on that you have visited.
You could describe what it is like to live in the north or the south of
England. If you live in another country you can describe what it is like
to live where you are. Let me give you an example.
When I was a child I lived in Zambia, Africa. It was quite a culture shock
at first as it was so different. The shops had very little in them; food wasn't
so easy to come by. You would sometimes find they had something like
butter on sale which was rare and would sell out quickly. Normally all you
could get was the local margarine. Now you can buy just about everything
without any difficulty.
They had a rainy season from November to March and from September it
was incredibly hot for a few months. It was cooler in June and July. You
had to drink boiled water or bottled water to avoid getting cholera.
There was only one museum in Livingstone at that time. There now is a
museum in the capital Lusaka. The only theatre was amateur theatre that
occurred now and again. There are no art galleries, although the museum in
Lusaka has held an art exhibition. On the whole it is just African art and
dancing that you can see.
I was very fortunate that when we arrived a wife of someone out there
showed my mother and me the townships. The small shacks where the majority
of Zambians lived. She showed us the real Zambia and for that I am very
grateful. My eyes were opened when I went to live there I saw poverty,
kindness, gentleness and although they had very little they were content
and happy. In a world that has become so materialistic we can learn a great
deal from them. There what is important is food, clean water, shelter, health,
family and looking after each other.
This is just an example you could make it shorter or longer. It is simply so
people can get an idea at what it is like to live in a different country. Hopefully
your experiences will interest other children and they will to be able to discover
new and fascinating things about other places.
So please send us any information (see below) and include your first name,
age and nationality only. DO NOT send any other details.
